Russ Cochran shot a career-best 10-under 62 to take the first round lead at the Champions Tour's season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship.
The 52-year-old shot a near-flawless round of
Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select LAGUNA 1.5 Putter on Friday, which included six birdies two eagles and no bogeys. It was enough to give him a two-shot lead over defending champion Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw.
With the help of his son Ryan on the bag, Cochran missed just one green in regulation. Making the turn in 32, he followed it up with two birdies and two eagles to seize the advantage.
Cochran secured two victories on the Champions Tour last year, at the Posco E&C Songdo and SAS Championships, after years of being winless on the PGA Tour. His lone PGA TOUR victory was at the 1991 Centel Western Open.
Tom Watson, tied for second with Ben Crenshaw two shots back, also made his move on the back nine, birdying six of the first seven holes.
Crenshaw, meanwhile, is still chasing his first
Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select LAGUNA 1.5 Putter on the Champion Tour. Winless in 167 stars, his 64 on Friday matched his career best on the senior circuit
