The Western Carolina women's golf team carded rounds of 302 and 300 on Monday to stand amidst a three-way tie at 602 following two-rounds of play at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the par-72, 5,980-yard Greenville Country Club. WCU is deadlocked with James Madison and Memphis, just 10 strokes outside of the top five.
Freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom fired rounds of two-over 74 and four-over 76 to stand tied amongst seven-others tied for 31st in the individual standings at 150 to lead the Catamounts. Senior Blaire Minter and freshman Maria Kjelldorff are both one-stroke back in a three-way tie for 39th at 151 for WCU.
Paired with golfers from Memphis, James Madison and Pennsylvania, the Catamounts will tee off with a shotgun start on holes eight through 11 on Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 am. Fans can follow the tournament with live scoring through
Tournament-host East Carolina - ranked 40th in the nation according to the most recent GolfStat rankings - leads Southern Conference foe, UNC Greensboro, by two strokes after 36 holes, 583-to-585. Maryland is third, five strokes in arrears, with UNC Wilmington (591) and Georgia State (592) rounding out the top five.
Other notables include the SoCon-rivals Furman in sixth-place at 594, College of Charleston in eighth, one-stroke ahead of WCU at 601, and Elon in a two-way tie for 16th at 620.
UNCG freshman Fanny Cnops posted rounds of three-under 69 and two-under 70 to stand tied with Laverry Kumar from UNC Wilmington atop the leader board at five-under, 139. Kumar posted the tournament's low-round of 67 over the second 18 to rally from ninth to tie Cnops for first. ECU's Amy Otteson and Furman's Laura Wearn are tied for third, one-stroke off the pace at 140cheap golf clubs with Samantha Morrell of Old Dominion rounding out the top five with one-round to play.
Twice beginning play on the par-5 ninth hole, Kvarnstrom carded four birdies against six bogies to play the first round at two-over par in a tie for 16th-place. However, a pair of double-bogies on holes she scored par during the first round - the par-4 seventh and 12th - plagued her round, relegating her to five-over until a birdie on her final hole - the par-3, No. 8 - brought her back to four-over for round two.
Kvarnstrom is tied for second with nine birdies through the first two rounds.
Minter posted six bogies over her opening 18 holes on Monday, countering with two pars to shoot four-over, 76, tied for 37th after the first round. The Marietta, Ga., native then played the first 13 holes of her second round at even-par, countering a pair of bogies with birdies on the par-5 18th and par 4, No. 2. However, she finished her day with two double-bogies sandwiched around a birdie to shoot three-over, 75, to hole her place inside the top 40 entering Tuesday's final round.
Minter is tied with Kjelldorff who rallied from 52nd to stand tied for 39th after 36 holes. The Saltsjobaden, Sweden, native cut three strokes off her opening round 77 to shoot a career-low, two-over, 74, to close the day, balancing four bogies by carding a pair of birdies.
Rounding out WCU's scorers were senior Rachel Nelson in a tie for 64th at 156 after trimming six strokes off her opening-round of 81 to shoot 75 over the second 18 holes; and junior transfer Michelle Bello who posted rounds of a career-best, 75, and 86 to stand tied for 85th overall.
The final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 am on Tuesday.
