Billy Idol

real name :William Michael Albert Broad
born : 30 November 1955 in Middlesex)

A styled macho. Good looking, wild, but nevertheless smart. Appearing mostly in tight black leather. A rebel.... That's Billy Idol.

The star of the late 70's and 80's is born on 30 November, 1955 in Stanmore/Middlesex-England. His civil name is Willem Michael Albert Broad. At the age of 3, he and his family emigrate to Long Island/New York-USA, where they are not kept for long though. Back in England, he soon attends university. Displeasuring his father, his references show the note 'idle'. This and his desire to change the world - to be an idol - let him finally come to his pseudonym 'Billy Idol'.

His tendency towards music makes him soon form the group 'The Bromley Project', together with Susan Dallion, known later on as 'Siouxsie And The Banshees'. However, that doesn't last long, and so he founds 'Chelsea', together with Tony James ('Sigue Sigue Sputnik'), involving Mick Jones ('The Clash'), John Towe and Brian James ('Damned'). Billy plays the guitar and Gene October is singer. But also this constellation lasts for just a short while. So him and Tony form 'Generation X', with which he can celebrate first successes. For the first time Billy sings and Bob 'Deerwood' Andrews takes over the guitar.

3 albums and 7 singles later the band breaks apart.

In 1981 he emigrates to Greenwich Village/New York, an artist district in the United States, with the intention to start a solo career. Soon he meets KISS manager Bill Aucoin, who makes him familiar with the producer Keith Forsey. Together with Steve Stevens playing the guitar, he just successes in North America initially. But he knows how to use the press and so he draws the attention of the world to him by insolent acts, excesses and self glorifying videos, marking the 'idol lip'. The 'rebel yell' succeeds and soon he becomes a superstar with hits like 'Rebel yell', 'Sweet sixteen', 'White wedding' and 'Flesh for fantasy'. With some delay, his records 'Billy Idol' (1982), 'Rebel Yell' (1983), 'Vital Idol' (1985) and 'Whiplash Smile' (1986) storm the european charts also.

After 'Whiplash Smile' it gets a little more quiet around Billy. He and his spouse Perri Lister become parents of William Wolf Broad. His career though seems to roll downhill. Stevens separates from Billy Idol and forms 'Steve Stevens Atomic Playboys'. Billy reappears on a benefit event 1989 beside Elton John, Phil Collins and Pattie LaBelle for the rock opera 'Tommy'. A cruel fate approaches him as he gets involved in an accident with his motor cycle in February 1990, almost killing him. Suffering two broken ribs and a smashed knee he is admitted to a clinic in Los Angeles and almost not able to play an assured part in Oliver Stone's film about 'The Doors'. However, Billy returns on stage - at first with a walking stick - presenting his new album 'Charmed Life' (1990). Together with Tom Jones he sings in the night club 'Spice' in Los Angeles. A world tour follows, starting in Montreal/Canada in August. For this tour he signed up the rising group 'Faith No More', who actually succeeds more than he does. In Norway a stone is thrown at Billy in November, injuring his left eye and therefore he has to cancel four concerts in Europe. The 35 year old doesn't seem to regain the success of once at all, and so it gets calmer again.

1991 a roomer about a reunion of Billy and Generation X is spread. That's not true though. Billy now draws attention with court proceedings for brawls and is punished with fines and suspended sentences. He beats up a female fan, for instance, after a night on the drink.

Then it becomes quiet again. 1993 he's found unconcious behind the steering wheel of his car. He had taken an overdose of psychopharmaceuticals and cocaine, but attempts to resuscitate him are successful. In the hospital he is filed as 'Alex Scott' in order to distract the press. In the same year he presents his album 'Cyberpunk' which, however, cannot resume old successes. In other words, it flops. A minor part in the movie 'The Wedding Singer' follows.

Then, in 2001, there's a new 'Best of'. Basically it includes nothing really new, except for some remixes and the song 'Don't you', which brought the Simple Minds into the charts years ago. Billy Idol rejected the song at that time.

According to roomers a new project together with Steve Stevens is getting off the ground. If that is true and what results out of it remains to be seen.

Early life and career

The name Billy Idol was inspired by a school teacher's description of Broad as "idle."[1]

Billy Idol lived in Worthing, England before attending Sussex University for only one year before joining the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans. Idol first joined the punk rock band Siouxsie & the Banshees (before the band had decided on a name) in 1976, but soon quit and joined Chelsea in 1977 as a guitarist. However, he and Chelsea bandmate Tony James soon quit that group and co-founded Generation X, with Idol switching from guitar to lead singer.

Generation X signed to Chrysalis Records and released three albums before breaking up. Idol moved to New York and began working as a solo artist and working with Steve Stevens, soon becoming an MTV staple with "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself", the latter of which had originally been recorded with Generation X.

In 1983, in an effort to introduce Idol to American audiences not yet as familiar with him as those in England, "Dancing With Myself" was released in the U.S. in conjunction with a music-video (directed by Tobe Hooper, produced by Jeffrey Abelson, and conceptualised by Keith Williams) that played in heavy rotation on MTV for six months. That video, in fact, sparked a whole new era of feature film directors trying their hand at music videos. Along with "White Wedding," the "Dancing With Myself" video helped make Idol a household name in America.

"White Wedding" was rumored to be a "nasty put down" by Idol and then-girlfriend Perri Lister, directed at Idol's sister for thinking that getting married was the answer to getting pregnant. In the 2001 recording of VH1 Storytellers Idol refutes that, saying his sister's wedding was simply inspiration for the song, which quickly took on its own form. Years after the video, Idol's sister is still married with three children. Idol and Perri broke up in 1990. They have a son together named Willem Wolfe Broad.

Soon after, Billy Idol was involved in a relationship with a woman of the name Linda Mathis (born and raised in Pasadena, CA). Though there was a thirteen year age difference, they began seeing each other regularly. At the age of 19, Linda became pregnant, and chose to move in with her mother to have her child. It was a girl named Bonnie Blue Broad, born August 21, 1989.

Rebel Yell and the 2000's

Steve Stevens and Billy IdolIdol's second LP, Rebel Yell (1984) was a blockbuster success, and established Idol's superstar status in the United States with hits like "Eyes Without a Face", "Flesh For Fantasy", and the title cut; Idol also became very popular in Europe thanks to this album and its singles, particularly in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and later in his native UK.

He did not release a new album until 1986; Whiplash Smile sold very well and proved to be a smash, including the hits "To Be A Lover", "Don't Need A Gun" and the Country-flavored "Sweet Sixteen". Stevens soon left for a solo career and Idol continued. A live cover of Tommy James' "Mony Mony" (the studio version of which was an Idol staple from early on) did well on MTV, and topped the US charts in 1987.

Just before the release of Charmed Life in 1990, Idol was in a motorcycle accident in which he almost lost his leg. The album had been named prior to Idol's accident. The album sold extremely well (led by "Cradle Of Love", from The Adventures of Ford Fairlane film), but Idol decided to take a break and acted in The Doors, directed by Oliver Stone. The follow-up to Charmed Life was 1993's Cyberpunk, which was a flop in the States, and Idol sank into drug addiction, nearly dying of a GHB overdose in 1994. Upon his discharge he calmed down and began to focus more on fatherhood.

Idol returned to the popular eye in 1998, when he played himself in The Wedding Singer, an Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore 80s romantic comedy, where "White Wedding" was used as the title track. Idol appeared on VH1 Storytellers and issued a successful Greatest Hits CD in 2001. Keith Forsey's Don't You (Forget About Me) appears on the compilation. Although Forsey originally wrote it with Idol in mind, Idol turned it down and eventually the song was given to Simple Minds who would go on to make it a #1 worldwide hit in 1985.

Billy Idol on the set of In The Summertime video (2006)He was also featured in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where the character Spike's look and attitude is based largely on him.

In 2000, Idol was invited to be one of the guest vocalists on Tony Iommi's album. His contribution was on the song Into The Night, which he also co-wrote. That same year his voice also starred as Odin, a mysterious alien character, in the animated fantasy film Heavy Metal 2000.

Idol was embarrassed at the 2002 National Rugby League Grand final, when a power problem resulted in no one being able to hear him singing.

"White Wedding" appeared on popular videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on fictional Classic Rock radio station, K-DST.

Devil's Playground, which came out 22 March 2005, was his first new studio album in nearly twelve years. This album was heavily promoted with use of the Devil's Playground album website, which was made by Squad in early 2005. The Devil's Playground album includes a cover of the classic song Plastic Jesus.

Idol played a handful of dates on the 2005 Vans Warped Tour and also made an appearance the UK's Download Festival at Donington Park . Then in 2006, as his only UK live date, he appeared headlining the Sunday night of GuilFest. That same year he made an appearance on Viva La Bam.

In 2006, Billy guested on his keyboardist Derek Sherinian's solo album Blood of the Snake, covering the 1970 Mungo Jerry hit, "In the Summertime". A video was also made featuring Idol and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash.

In November 2006, Idol released a Christmas album called Billy Idol: Happy Holidays. It includes classic Christmas songs like "Frosty the Snowman", "Jingle Bell Rock", and "Silent Night", plus some originals.
