One of Finland’s most respected bands they reached their goals quickly and their dreams of rock stardom become a reality.

They formed in 1994 in Helsinki, Finland while the band members were still in high school.
Lauri Ylönen and Eero Heinonen met each other in third grade when they both were nine years old, and have been close friends during the school years since.
When they started at Suutarila high school in the early 1990s, they met Pauli Rantasalmi and later Janne Heiskanen.

In 1994 they decided to create their own band in school.
They practiced a lot, and at the end of the year they played their very first show before the Christmas holiday.
At that time they were initially known as Sputnik, then Antilla then Trashmosh and then simply Rasmus In Sweden and Denmark "Rasmus" is a Scandinavian man's name that comes from the Greek Erasmus, which means loveable. It was the ex-drummer Janne Heiskanen who came up with the name.

Before releasing their fourth studio album Into (2001), they were simply known as Rasmus, but changed their name to The Rasmus in order to avoid being confused with a Swedish DJ of the same name. Their 2003 hit "In the Shadows" made them famous outside Scandinavia and received worldwide press attention.

Today the band is one of Finland's most successful bands with more than 1,5 million sold albums worldwide, eight gold awards and five platinum awards.[5] They have released six studio albums, one compilation album and 21 singles. Some of the band's most famous songs are the singles "Liquid", "F-F-F-Falling", "In the Shadows", "First Day of My Life", "Funeral Song" , "No Fear" and "Guilty"

Lauri Johannes Ylönen (born April 23, 1979 in Helsinki, Finland) is the frontman of the Finnish alternative rock band The Rasmus.
Ylönen was born and grew up in Helsinki, Finland. At a young age he became attracted to music. He learned to play the piano unwillingly when he was five years old. Later, he also learned to play the guitar and drums. When Ylönen was eight years old, starting third grade in elementary school, he met Eero Heinonen (the bassist of The Rasmus) and they became close mates during the school year. Ylönen's older sister, Hannah, said that he should try to sing as well. He tried and decided to continue with that.
When He and Heinonen started at Suutarila high school in the early 1990s, they met Pauli Rantasalmi and later Janne Heiskanen. Ylönen initiated the project of The Rasmus (then called just "Rasmus") in 1994, along with Eero Heinonen (bass) Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar), and Janne Heiskanen (drums). First, they called themselves Sputnik, then Antilla, and at last Rasmus. They played their very first show before the winter break in school, 1994. They played songs with a style of rock and funk. Ylönen became the lead singer, composer and songwriter of the band. He quit school because the band took too much of his time.
In 1998, after having released three albums, Janne Heiskanen left and Aki Hakala became The Rasmus' new drummer. In the same year, the band's former manager Teja Kotilainen left their current record label, Warner Music Finland. The band signed to Playground Music Scandinavia soon afterwards.
In 1999, an association called Dynasty was founded. The association consists of the three Finnish bands The Rasmus, Killer and Kwan. The purpose of Dynasty was to signify allegiance and friendship between the bands and their members. Many members have tattoos or wear the Dynasty logotype on guitar straps. The bands have often worked together on music.
In 2004, Ylönen recorded a song together with Apocalyptica and HIM's singer Ville Valo, named "Bittersweet". The song is available on Apocalyptica's self-titled album, Apocalyptica. It has also been released as a single and music video.
One year later he released another song with Apocalyptica, named "Life Burns!". This song was also released as a single and music video. The musical genre was much heavier than "Bittersweet." It is taken from the same album as "Bittersweet
After many years of traveling and touring, The Rasmus has become one of the most popular bands in Finland, as well as being rather well-known throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Ylönen has said that Hakala has become a very close friend to him compared with the others.

Lauri: “I don’t really believe in life after death - live the life you’re living now: you only get one go at it.”

Pauli about Lauri: “Lauri is what you would call an artist. He lives 24 hours a day for his music, and if it doesn't work he nearly has a breakdown. That luckily doesn't happen but then he is really as sad as his lyrics. On the other hand he is a very happy chap who loves to tell jokes and can be really childish. Lauri really is crazy - but in a good way!”.

Aki-Markus Juhani Hakala (born 28 October 1979 in Espoo) is the drummer of the Finnish band The Rasmus
He joined The Rasmus after the former drummer Janne Heiskanen left the band in 1998, short after the release of Hell of a Tester. The first song he took part in was Last Waltz from the album Into.
Aki originally sold band merchandise at their shows and joined the band after "jamming" with the guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi. He says that the only thing he was ever good at was drumming, and he "sucked at everything else", although he has done some acting in the past in Siamin tytöt (a Finnish drama series) and can play the guitar. Before joining The Rasmus, he was a drummer for Killer and Kwan, (he was replaced by Risto).
Aki currently uses Pearl drums with Istanbul cymbals, however he has used Zildjian and Sabian cymbals in the past.
In 2006, Aki decided to finally get eye surgery, and now no longer needs his trademark black glasses.

Aki: “I started off wanting to be a policeman, teacher or someone who helps people.”

Lauri about Aki: “When we are on tour I always share a room with Aki. He is a good friend who I can talk about anything with. We always go to the after-show parties together and usually don't come home until dawn. And: Aki is always surrounded by girls! I don't know how he does it because he is sitting behind the drums! But it's fun for me, because I am so shy around girls but through him I can get to know them. So Aki is doing me a favour!”.
