NEGATIVE INTERVIEW 2.12.2006.,TAVASTIA-HELSINKI NATALIE:Please introduce yourself!
JONNE:Hei,my name is Jonne, and I'm doing lead vocals in Finnish band called Negative.
NATALIE.Who started Negative,why,when,early days,etc.?
JONNE:I was the one to start the band.I started it when I was a teenager, back in 1997./1998.
It was a long process with finding the rest of band members. Before Negative,we all have played in different bands.
All those bands were great bands from Tampere. So,little by little we all got together and made a dream-team band from Tampere.
In the begining we didn't had a keyboard player, but in 2003.Snack joined us and we got the full line-up!
NATALIE:Who choosed name Negative? What does it stands for?
JONNE:Mostly I was and still I'm influenced by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.
Gathering of band for me was great way to show my teenager's rebell.Name Negative seemed as great choice for me.
NATALIE.How did you got your first record deal?
JONNE:It was a funny story…We didn't knew that we have friend which could help us,and that actually he
has label Gbfm in our hometown Tampere. We recorded 1st demo,Gbfm people liked it,and they offered us record deal.
We're all creative characters, and we're really happy with this kind of label. It's more like indie label, not major one.
They give us feedom when it comes to creating of music, and that's what we need.
We don't want anyone to tell us what we should do,or what we should not do.
NATALIE:In 2002.you've released debut album „War of Love“,which brought you fame,and it's now gold,but soon
maybe even platinum album.Did you expected success like that one?
JONNE:Well, yes I expected something like that cause, before we signed anything with Gbfm records,we have played many gigs, and gained fans.
Also our first album was special, cause actually it was a collection of demos we have released before „War of Love“!In other hand,we didn't expected sucha great support from radio stations. They played our songs on radio so much, what is not usual case with new and not so known bands in Finland.
NATALIE:On your previous album „Sweet&Deceiful“ there's song „Until you're mine“,and it's featured with Ville Laihiala.
How did you got that colaboration?
JONNE:Yes,that's true.I was huge fan of Sentenced, and rest of band members are more or less fans of Sentenced. Some of guys got the idea to arrange Ville to sing with me on song „Unitl you're mine“.When I was writing music for that song, they have recognized this Sentenced tune in it.I decided to call Ville Laihiala and ask him if he would like to do the duet.He told me to send him the song,so he'll see if he's available to do the recording.
I thought that he won't like song at all,but then he called back, and said that he liked the song, and that he accepts the duet.
He took an airplane from Oulu to Helsinki, and we recorded his vocals in one day, actually in 25-30 minutes, what was very professional.
NATALIE:Of all places you've been to with Negative, which one is your most fave one?
JONNE:I likes all the places I've been to,and it's always a great experience. But I have to mention, that our last tour in Germany was crazy.
On one of our gigs, there were so many people shouting that I even got the ear damage.
NATALIE:You have new album out now,and it's called „Anorectic“.What can be heard on this one?
How much music of Negative changed from „War of Love“ to „Anorectic“?
JONNE:“Anorectic“ is completely different album. With this one we wanted to try to push the limits higher. As I've already said our first album was kinda demo collection, and it was our break-through album.Second album „Sweet and Deceiful“ was more melancholic and it had this fragile tune…But „Anorectic“ is more…It sounds more like back to roots. We wanted songs to sound more in rock'n'roll style.
NATALIE:Who influenced you the most in musical sense?
JONNE:Except Nirvana,my big influence were Guns'n'Roses.When I was like 13 years old,I saw gig of Guns'n'Roses on
TV and I was completely amazed,so from then I have wish to do the same thing,to have sucha audience and to gain sucha success.
We won't stop working on it.At least not before we get more famous then Coca-Cola.
Also I like HIM.I like the way Ville Valo is writing lyrics. He has really nice sense for melody!
NATALIE:What would you like to get for Xmas?
JONNE:I would like to get...Hm...I'm not sure yet, where I'm going to spend my Xmas, but I would like to spend it with my familly and friends.
Also I hope to move in my new apartament in a soon time.
NATALIE:Message for Croatian audience!?
JONNE:Whatever you do stay faithful to yourself!Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
