PGA TOUR - THE MCGLADREY CLASSIC - Seaside The PGA Tour returns to Georgia this week for The McGladrey Classic.
This will be the second year of the tournament, and in year one, Heath Slocum earned his fourth tour victory.
Slocum fired three straight 66s to open the event, then closed with a two- under 68 to hold off Bill Haas. Slocum drained a 60-foot birdie effort from off the green on the 16th to take a two-shot lead into the final two holes.
He needed that extra shot too because he bogeyed the last to cut his winning margin to one. The birdie putt was probably his biggest putt since a 21-foot par-saver to win The Barclays one year earlier.
Haas, who had won the week before, eagled the 15th to close the gap, but he could only par the final three holes to take second by himself.
While those two were battling for the title, former PGA Champion David Toms was throwing it away. Toms shared the lead after 15 holes of the final round, but missed a four-foot par chance on 16 and followed with another bogey on the 17th. He finished in a tie for third, two strokes back.
The tournament was pushed back a week from last year and is the penultimate event of the Fall Series. With the money title on the line, Webb Simpson is playing this week in an effort to overtake Luke Donald atop the money list. Simpson is about $69,000 behind Donald, and would need a top-15 finish to take over the money list lead.
If Simpson is unable to do so this week, he will likely join the field in Disney World next week. Donald may do the same, but his wife is expecting a child anytime and that could change his plans.
Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink were among the players that helped this tournament gain a spot in the Fall Series. They are in the field along with fellow former major champions Angel Cabrera, Ben Curtis, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell, Davis Love III, Louis Oosthuizen, Vijay Singh and Toms.
Twenty-seven players ranked between 120 and 150 on the current money list will also be in Sea Island this week as they battle to get inside the top-125 on the money list.
Oosthuizen and Cabrera are in that group, but they are still exempt from their respective wins at the 2010 British Open and the 2009 Masters.
However, Curtis and Duval's exemptions have long run out, so they are fighting to keep their tour card for 2012.
Golf Channel has three hours of coverage all four days.
The tour heads to Disney World next week for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. Robert Garrigus closed with an eight-under 64 last year to win by three strokes over Roland Thatcher.
EUROPEAN TOUR
PORTUGAL MASTERS - Oceanico Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura, Portugal - The fifth playing of the Portugal Masters will have some star power of its own this week.
Former major champions Martin Kaymer and Padraig Harrington will headline the field at Oceanico Victoria Golf Course. They are two of five former major winners in the field and are among 20 past Ryder Cup players that will compete this week.
One of the hottest players on the European Tour is also playing this week. Thomas Bjorn missed the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, but that came on the heels of back-to-back wins at Gleneagles and Crans-sur-Sierre.
Richard Green fired a seven-underTaylorMade R9 Supertri Driver 65 in the final round last year to pick up his third European Tour title. He erased a seven-stroke deficit and won by two. It was his first win since 2007.
Pablo Martin was the third-round leader, but had three bogeys in a four-hole span late in the final round to end three strokes back at minus-15.
Francesco Molinari had an odd week. He posted a pair of 10-under 62s to go along with two two-over 74s.
Golf Channel has four hours of action all four days.
The tour shifts right back to Spain next week for the Castello Masters, where Matteo Manassero cruised to a four-stroke victory last year.
LPGA TOUR
SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIA - Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - The LPGA Tour remains in Asia for the second of four straight events on that continent.
Jimin Kang closed with a six-under 65 last year to win the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia. The win was Kang's second on the LPGA Tour with the other coming in 2005.
Kang did what she needed to do to earn the win, but she also received a gift from Juli Inkster. The World Golf Hall of Famer was tied for the lead until stumbling to a bogey on the final hole to end one back.
Last year's tournament was 54 holes, while this year it has been stretched to 72 holes.
Sixteen of the top-20 players in the world are in the field at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club this week. That group includes world No. 1 Yani Tseng, who won for sixth time this season last week in South Korea.
Golf Channel has coverage of all four rounds.
The tour moves to Taiwan next week for the first playing of the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2011.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
AT&T CHAMPIONSHIP - TPC San Antonio (AT&T Canyons Course) San Antonio, Texas - The 2010 AT&T Championship came had a dramatic ending as Rod Spittle parred the first playoff hole to beat Jeff Sluman.
Spittle, who never played on the PGA Tour, won for the first time on the senior circuit. The win came in just his fifth tour start of 2010 and gave him full tour membership for this year.
He hadn't been on the Champions Tour full time since 2008. Spittle nearly won for the second time earlier this year as he finished one stroke behind Tom Lehman at the Allianz Championship.
Spittle has four top-10 finishes this season and, despite not winning again, is 19th on the Champions Tour money list.
Among those hoping to grab the title from Spittle is Brad Faxon, who was handed his first tour title last weekend. Faxon led by one after two rounds, and was declared the winner when Sunday's play was washed out by heavy rain.
Golf Channel will have action of all three rounds.
Next week is the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. John Cook closed with back-to-back 67s to win by two last year, while Bernhard Langer won the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
MICCOSUKEE CHAMPIONSHIP - Miccosukee Golf & Country Club, Miami, Florida - Jason Gore walked off with a four-stroke win last year and in doing so, he set the Nationwide Tour record for most victories.
Gore, who won three times in 2005 en route to the Battlefield promotion, picked up his seventh Nationwide Tour title.
After three straight rounds in the 60s, Gore closed with a 71 to finish four clear of Scott Gutschewski and Kevin Kisner.
Gore, who is in the field this week, has split his time between the PGA and Nationwide Tours this season, and also missed an extended period of time with a shoulder injury.
He has made it to the weekend in just three of his last 10 starts. In that span, he also has three withdrawals and for missed cuts.
There is just one more tournament for players to get inside the top 60 on the money list, which will get them into the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship. Once there, the top 25 on the money list at season's end, will earn their PGA Tour cards for 2012.
Golf Channel will have coverage all four days.
The tour moves to Ponte Vedra next week for the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open, where David Mathis won last year.
